9 Common Mistakes ❌ When Booking a Wedding Videographer
Looking for a wedding videographer? Awesome! But before you lock someone in, here are 9 common mistakes couples often make—plus how to steer clear of them. These tips could save you a lot of stress en disappointment.
1. Booking the wrong time coverage ⏱️
Some couples only book their videographer for the ceremony and a bit of the cocktail hour. But that means you’re missing out on all those raw, beautiful moments, like getting ready in the morning, or the epic dance floor chaos at night. It’s not just about the rings and first dance.. It’s about the moments in between – like these. Chances are, you’ll want more coverage than you originally thought.
2. Choosing based on price alone 💸
Of course, budget matters. But going with the cheapest option can end up being the most expensive mistake—especially if you end up with a video that misses key moments, has awkward angles, or simply doesn’t feel like you. You can find info about my pricing on this page.
3. Not watching full films ⏯️
It’s easy to skim highlight reels, but make time to watch at least a few full-length wedding films. If you find yourself bored halfway through, that’s a red flag—you want a film that holds your attention from beginning to end. Here’s a film that will definitely appeal to you and it’s full of these ‘in-between’ glances that speak volumes moments!
4. Only watching the first video on their site 👀
That top video? It’s usually their best work. Dig deeper. Watch a few others. If the rest feel inconsistent or don’t move you the same way, take note.
5. Skipping a video or in-person meeting 🤝
Your videographer will be by your side on one of the most intimate days of your life. You need to feel comfortable with them. A quick video call helps you see if you “click”—and trust me, that chemistry matters on the day. Interested in my availability? Shoot a message by clicking here.
6. Insisting on your own music without flexibility 🎶
Have a song in mind? Great! Some of my best films have music input from couples. Here’s an example
But keep an open mind. Some songs may feel special to you, but they might not work well for editing. Share your ideas, then let the videographer do their magic—they know how to shape a story that flows.
7. Not asking practical questions 🙋♀️
When will you receive your film? What if it rains? Do they use backup gear? How do they work with your photographer? These are all key questions to ask ahead of time to avoid confusion or disappointment.
8. Booking based solely on recommendations
Your cousin might’ve loved their videographer—but that doesn’t automatically mean they’re a good fit for you. Get inspired by recommendations, but always trust your own gut and do your own research.
9. Not checking how they handle audio and lighting 📣
Great audio is just as important as video. Ask if they use microphones. How do they deal with wind, low light, or background noise? Poor audio is one of the hardest things to fix later. You don’t want a film where your vows or fathers speech can’t be heard. I shot a wedding on a beach where the wind was outrageous, but due to the techniques and equipment I use it all turned out well. Watch it here.
Final thoughts:
A wedding film is one of the most lasting investments you’ll make for your big day. Avoiding these common mistakes means you’re much more likely to end up with something you’ll be proud to watch again and again.
