2 Wedding Videography Styles: Which One Is Right for You🌄?

Great idea thinking about a wedding videographer! But before you just book someone, you really need to check out their style. It will determine how your wedding film looks and most of all: whether you’ll love rewatching it later.

Why is a videographer’s style so important?

Every wedding videographer has their own way of shooting and editing. Some wedding videos look like a romantic Hollywood movie, while others are more natural and spontaneous, almost like a documentary.

It’s important to think about what suits you. Do you love dreamy slow-motion shots and dramatic music? Or do you prefer a natural, unscripted feel? Watching the different examples I provided in the article below will help you figure out what you like.

Popular wedding videography styles

📹 1. Documentary/journalistic style
This is a more natural approach and the approach I lean towards – see for example in this film I made. The videographer captures everything as it happens, without interfering or directing. No staged moments. Just raw, real emotions.

A good understanding of the moments you value is key here. Do you value lots of moments alone with your partner on the wedding day and is a sneak out during golden hour your dream? Or do you lean more towards having many moments together with your partner, friends, family and guests and enjoy the golden hour toasting with them? I’ll get to know this

Pros:

  • You don’t have to think about the camera at all.
  • Perfect if you don’t like posing or acting.
  • Feels real and timeless.

Cons:

  • Less artistic or dramatic shots.
  • May lack that ‘Hollywood feel.’

👤 Videographer’s role:
The videographer is almost invisible in this style. They move discreetly among the guests and capture everything naturally.

🎬 2. Cinematic wedding video
This is the ultra-polished, movie-like style – like this video from a colleague of mine – where the videographer edits the footage as if it’s a real film. Think slow-motion shots, dreamy transitions, and perfectly timed music.

Pros:

  • Looks super professional, like a real movie.
  • Beautiful, emotional, and artistic shots.
  • Color grading and editing make it extra special.

Cons:

  • The videographer is usually more present, giving directions.
  • Editing takes longer, so you might have to wait a bit for the final video.

Videographer’s role:
The videographer is quite involved in this style. They might ask you to stand in a certain spot or repeat an action for the perfect shot.

A few more tips

💡 Pick a videographer you vibe with – You’ll spend the whole day with them, so make sure you like them as a person too.

💡 Ask about audio quality – If you want vows or speeches in the video, make sure they use professional audio equipment.

💡 Decide on the video length – Do you want a short highlight film or a full-length wedding video?

Which style is right for you?

It all comes down to what you want. If you dream of an epic, cinematic wedding film, go for that style. If you want a raw, natural memory of the day, a documentary style might be better.

My advice: watch different videos, discuss what you love, and choose a videographer who really fits you! 🎥✨
