9 Common Mistakes ❌ When Booking a Wedding Videographer

Looking for a wedding videographer? Great! But before you commit, here are 9 common mistakes couples make—and how to avoid them. These tips can save you a lot of stress and disappointment.

1. Booking the Wrong Time ⏱️
Some couples book their videographer for just the ceremony and part of the cocktail hour. But then you miss out on all the pure, beautiful moments, like getting ready in the morning. It’s not about putting on your coat… It’s about the pure, proud emotions of your mom when she sees you, the nerves as you think about what the day holds, and the connection with your family. It’s not all about the rings and the first dance… It’s about the in-between moments – like this one. Chances are you’ll want more coverage than you originally thought.

2. Choose based on price alone 💸
Budget is important, but going for the cheapest option can end up being the most expensive mistake – especially if you end up with a video that misses those pure, important moments like described in point 1. You don’t want weird angles, or a video that simply doesn’t suit you. Info on my pricing can be found on this page.

3. Don’t watch full-length movies ⏯️
It’s easy to binge-watch highlight reels, but take the time to watch at least a few full-length wedding movies. Get bored halfway through? Warning – you want a movie that will hold your attention from start to finish. Here’s a movie that’s sure to speak to you, full of those meaningful moments in between!

4. Only watch the first video on their site 👀
That top video? Usually their best work. Dig deeper. Watch a few more. If the rest feel inconsistent or don’t hit you the same way, pay attention.

5. Don’t schedule a video call or meet-up 🤝
Your videographer is by your side on one of your most intimate days. You need to feel comfortable. A quick video call will help you see if there’s a “click” – and trust me, that chemistry matters on the day. Curious about my availability? Send me a message via this link.

6. Sticking to your own music without flexibility 🎶
A specific song in mind? Great! Some great movies have music suggestions from couples. Here's an example:

But keep an open mind. Some songs feel special to you, but might not work well for editing. Share your ideas, and then let the videographer do his magic – he knows how to create a flowing story.

7. Not asking practical questions 🙋‍♀️
When will you get your film? What if it rains? Do they use backup equipment? How do they work with your photographer? These are all important questions to ask beforehand to avoid confusion or disappointment.

8. Book based on recommendations only
Your cousin may have loved their videographer – but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re the right fit for you. Take inspiration from recommendations, but always trust your gut and do your own research.

9. Don’t ask about audio and lighting 📣
Good audio is just as important as video. Ask if they use microphones. How do they deal with wind, low light, or background noise? Bad audio is one of the hardest things to fix later. You don’t want to end up with a film where your vows or father’s speech can’t be heard. I once filmed a beach wedding in a huge wind, but my techniques and gear made it perfect. Watch it here.

Finally:
A wedding film is one of the most lasting investments you can make for your big day. Avoiding these common mistakes means you’ll have a much better chance of creating something you’ll be proud of and look back on fondly.
